Lakewood, NJ (July 25, 2022) – A woman died on Friday, July 22nd and her passenger is in the hospital after a driver collided head-first into their SUV in Lakewood.

Police responded to the scene in the area of East Lake Park Drive and South Lake Drive at about 8:20 p.m. and discovered that several people had been injured.

An investigation showed that a 2018 Chevrolet Impala driven by a 20-year-old man from Lakewood was traveling eastbound on South Lake Drive when he swerved over the double yellow line and crashed head-on with a 2017 Toyota Rav4.

The occupants of the Rav4 were the driver, a 35-year-old woman from Jackson, and 44-year-old Juana Lopez-Hernandez, a citizen of Mexico, the front seat passenger.

The driver of the Toyota was transported to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune.  She is currently listed in stable condition.

Lopez-Hernandez was taken by ambulance to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood where she passed away due to the severity of her injuries.

The adult male driver of the wrong-way vehicle was transferred to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune where he was treated and has since been released.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, Ms. Juana Lopez-Hernandez, at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and her family in hopes of a full recovery.

Head-On Accidents in New Jersey

In New Jersey, as in many other states, liability is determined via a system of modified comparative fault. This means victims are only expected to prove that the other driver was at least 51% responsible for the crash. Once this is proven, they are allowed to seek compensation for any losses resulting from the event.

If a head-on crash was caused by another motorist’s irresponsible behavior, then seriously injured victims could be entitled to file a suit against them.

Your basic compensatory damages could cover multiple damages, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Vehicle replacement or repair
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost income

In New Jersey, injured victims can pursue compensatory, general, and punitive damages. A claimant seeking compensatory damages is involved in just about every single head-on collision case that goes to court. Winning your case means that you will be awarded economic recovery for any injuries and property damage that you have endured.

Our team works diligently to help victims hold those at fault accountable and collect the maximum amount of compensation for medical treatment, lost wages, and various other damages resulting from their accidents.
