An ambulance was involved in a multi-vehicle crash Friday on Interstate 91 North in Middletown.

According to accident reports filed by State Police, the ambulance was arriving at a scene near Exit 20 on I-91 North where a vehicle had struck the guard rail. As it arrived, the ambulance was struck on the rear driver’s side, leading to a four-car crash in the left lane, reports said. One of the other vehicles involved continued on I-91 North and was involved in a separate collision.

The driver involved in the original crash, Linda Pernal, of Hamden, was arrested on charges of suspicion of driving under the influence, illegal possession and driving with a suspended license, a police report said. Pernal’s vehicle collided with the guard rail off the left shoulder, then the right shoulder, according to the report. She sustained minor injuries and was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital before being arrested.

Pernal was released on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court on Sept. 6.

The occupants in the ambulance were transported by another ambulance for treatment of reported injuries. Occupants of one of the other vehicles involved were taken to Middlesex Hospital. No other injuries were reported.
