One of New Hampshire’s largest hospitals is launching an internal review following accusations and concerns over a former surgeon.

Catholic Medical Center in Manchester said it will hire an outside firm to lead the investigation in the wake of a report by The Boston Globe Spotlight team that claimed that a retired surgeon associated with CMC settled a number of complaints connected to his time there.

According to the Spotlight report, Dr. Yvon Baribeau settled multiple malpractice claims, some of which accused him of errors that led to a patient’s death.

The report also said several of Baribeau’s colleagues filed complaints to hospital administrators that were ignored.

Alex Walker, president and CEO of CMC, said laws prevent the hospital from speaking in specific detail about personnel matters, including whether Baribeau was ever reprimanded. But he said he didn’t personally have any concerns with Baribeau, and any concerns or complaints brought to his attention were addressed in real time.

CMC said many of the allegations that appeared in the story were investigated over the course of several years by state and federal authorities and regulators and were eventually dismissed.

The hospital said those agencies had legal and complete access to detailed patient information that CMC could not share with the Globe.

“CMC has always been transparent about patient safety,” Walker said.

The hospital is in the process of hiring an outside firm to conduct an internal review of its clinical oversight and accountability, peer review, and reporting processes.

“The public, patients, our community will know that CMC has been, is, and will continue to be, an outstanding program,” Walker said.

He said the hospital is in the process of selecting a firm for the review, which is expected to take months to complete.

News 9 reached out to Baribeau and his attorney for comment but has not heard back.
